When you’re younger adults can do no wrong
The words they speak and stories they tell are sated in absolute truth
So you don’t notice when the words that tumble from their mouth cause someone’s face to fall
You overlook the harsh tone of voice or the momentary loss of control because an adult can do no wrong
Nothing prepares you for the moment when the statement becomes a lie
A lie woven in to make children feel safe so that they ignore the atrocities going on around them
I know I could never forget the moment I saw the beer cans in the fridge
The night the cans piled up on the ground as more and more of the burning liquor went down his throat turning someone I thought I knew into someone I could never understand
Adults are far from perfect my stepfather taught me that
